Gary Cahill Shirks Sincerity After Yet Another Mistake

When Gary Cahill felt that he had been fouled in the build-up to Swansea’s second goal a few weeks ago versus Chelsea – Leroy Fer bundling the England centre-back off the ball and finishing to give his side a 2-1 lead, before Diego Costa scored an acrobatic late equaliser – he boldly emerged after the match to show everyone the extent of his fury.

Cahill called Fer’s challenge a ‘clear foul’ that ought to have been visible as far away as the moon, angrily lamenting how the referee’s inaction had ‘killed’ him and his team by influencing the match’s outcome. And quite remarkably as a Chelsea player whose side over the years has benefitted from so many favourable decisions, fans and pundits were quick to praise his remarks for their purported passion, honesty, and sincerity.

But while it was most certainly a foul by Fer, Cahill had been slow to turn and sloppy in possession, and when the mistakes kept coming without anyone else to blame, would Cahill show the same dedication towards his post-match commitments?

Following a 1-2 home defeat against Liverpool, Chelsea proceeded to concede three times without reply away to Arsenal. Arsenal’s opening goal came when Cahill again proved sluggish to turn, before scuffing a back-pass straight into the path of Alexis Sánchez. Of course Cahill made no appearance after the game showing anger and taking responsibility over his mistake. Instead after another lapse in concentration forced a panicked clearance, he made a public display of berating goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, gesticulating as though Courtois was too slow from his goal-line.

Cahill presumably hoped that by drawing attention to Courtois, he would escape or share round the brunt of the criticism for another poor performance. How’s that for honesty and passion? The same sort of thing is a feature of Cahill’s Twitter account, which springs to life every time he scores a goal, but following mistakes and defeats his penchant for self-evaluation falls strangely silent.
